
Pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 cup of chopped dates and 1 tsp. baking soda. Let stand.
Mix:
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts
Add date mixture.
Cook at 350F for 30 minutes.
Ice while warm with following icing.
Icing:
5 tbsp. brown sugar
5 tbsp. cream
2 tbsp. butter
Boil together for 3 minutes. Spread over cake while it is still warm. Sprinkle cake with coconut or chopped nuts.
